The Animal By-Products Regulations 2005 (as amended) came into force on the 28th September 2005 and update the 2003 Regulations. If you are a food retailer, distributor, manufacturer or caterer these regulations may affect you.
The regulations are a set of rules governing the collection, handling, transport, storage and disposal of animal by-products, such as catering wastes, former foodstuffs and other animal waste. The aim of the regulations to control the risks associated with disease for both animals and the general public.
Raw meat and fish that require cooking before consumption must only be disposed of by either rendering, incineration or through an approved biogas or composting plant. Former foodstuffs such as uncooked and lightly cooked meats, poultry and fish that are no longer intended for human consumption, due to being out of date or packaging defects must also only be disposed of in the same way as raw meat and fish.
