The Landfill Directive (1999/31/EC) became law in July 2001. This states that whole tyres must be banned from landfill by no later than 2003, and shredded tyres no later than 2006. As a controlled waste under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, a Duty of Care is placed upon waste producers to ensure that waste material is disposed of safely through registered carriers to licensed sites.
